What Documents Do You Need to Scrap a Car?

Before handing over your vehicle, you’ll need to complete a V5C logbook and answer some questions about the scrapping of your car. If you’re scrapping your car because it failed its MOT, then it’s important you let us know why.

We’ll need you to gather up all the documents we need to scrap the car including:

  • DVLA V5 Log Book
  • 2 Forms of personal ID
  • Proof your car was written off by your insurer (if involved in crash).

Why are Documents Important When Scrapping a Car?

As an Authorised Treatment Facilities (ATFs), we always request paperwork to confirm legal ownership and prevent stolen vehicles being disposed of. DVLA requirements mean the registered keeper remains responsible for a car until it’s properly logged as destroyed, so missing this step can lead to unwanted tax or penalty notices.

Environmental regulations also require vehicles to be processed by a licensed ATF, and good documentation protects both buyer and seller with a clear record of the transaction.

The Essential Documents You'll Need

V5C Logbook (Vehicle Registration Certificate) The V5C links a car to its registered keeper and speeds up identification. When scrapping, you’ll complete Section 9 (“Sale, Transfer, or Disposal”) to notify the DVLA. Note that it proves you’re the registered keeper, not necessarily the legal owner.

Proof of Identity Most dealers ask for a driving licence, passport, or other government-issued photo ID to confirm who they’re dealing with and prevent fraud.

Proof of Address (if requested) Some ATFs also request a utility bill, council tax bill, or bank statement, though this varies between companies.

Do You Need to Notify the DVLA? Yes. Once your car is collected, you must notify the DVLA that it’s been scrapped, either online for instant confirmation or by post. This transfers responsibility away from you, so you’re no longer liable for tax, insurance queries, or penalty notices tied to that vehicle.

What Is a Certificate of Destruction? A Certificate of Destruction is issued once your vehicle has been fully processed. It’s official proof the car no longer exists and was disposed of legally. You should receive it at or shortly after collection, and it’s worth keeping for your records.
